Tech law GEEK

Is this an advertisement?

I thought it was amusing when I heard some state Bars consider each page on a firm's website a separate ad subject to review, but now it seems New York is considering expanding the rule to cover blogs. Read the ABA Journal report.

This is another reason why the decision to practice law can be very difficult for students who have lived and worked online for several years, including yours truly. Rulemakers, who are "woefully out of touch" with the reality of the virtual workplace, are only undermining their credibility and authority with proposals like this. Perhaps Kevin O’Keefe sums it up best:

"...you can see why the legal profession has an awful reputation. We go around passing rules that make us look like idiots and prevent us from helping [] the consumer."

LIONs and Cougars and Bauer Alumni

Thanks to Craig Rickard for getting the UH Alumni Group off the ground at LinkedIn. For those of you who haven't joined yet, you might be surprised who else is already LinkedIn. Although the group was started by Bauer College of Business alumni, all Cougars are welcome to join in.

I was fortunate to already know some LinkedIn Open Networkers (LIONs) who put me in touch with some long, lost colleagues. Feel free to connect to me if it might help you get in touch with old classmates, coworkers, and colleagues, and meeting some very interesting people only 2 or 3 degrees away. Despite what you might hear about social networking sites in the news, I've been pleasantly surprised with the folks I've been (re)introduced to on LinkedIn. You're welcome to join me.

Want to learn more about UHLC?

The admissions staff at UHLC started their own blog with updates on this year's application process and posts from current students for a glimpse of life at UHLC these days. You'll even find links to more blogs by current students, professors, and alumni like yours truly. (I'm still trying to get used to the idea of being an alum, myself!)
